On May 22, 2024, Brownbag 49 featured Hassan Mirbahar, a PhD candidate at the University of Technology Sydney and a COMPOSE fellow at UIII’s Faculty of Social Sciences. The session, titled “Noise or Signal: What Does Data Tell Us About Elections in Karachi, Pakistan?” explored the paradox of high voter turnout in Karachi despite election violence. Based on his PhD research, “Ruling of the Edge: Karachi and Violent Power-sharing in Karachi,” Hassan examined the intersection of political violence and power-sharing governance in Pakistan’s largest city.
