On June 26, 2024, the Faculty of Social Sciences at UIII hosted Brownbag 54, where Marcus Mietzner, an Associate Professor at the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, Australian National University, and Gde Dwitya Metera, a faculty member at UIII, discussed “The Coalitions Presidents Make: Presidential Power and Its Limits in Democratic Indonesia.” The event, held from 10:00 to 11:30 AM in Classroom 9, Faculty B Building, UIII, explored how Indonesia has transformed its volatile post-authoritarian presidential system into one of the world’s most stable democracies. The speakers analyzed the coalition-building strategies used by Indonesian presidents, including alliances with diverse groups such as the military, police, bureaucracy, local governments, oligarchs, and Muslim groups, and how these strategies contribute to regime stability while also posing risks for democratic development.
