On June 5, 2024, Serey Rithiya, an Adjunct Professor at the American University of Phnom Penh, Doctoral Candidate at Northern Illinois University, and COMPOSE Fellow at UIII’s Faculty of Social Sciences, led a discussion titled “Power, Norms, and Trust: ASEAN and the South China Sea Disputes.” The session, held from 14:00 to 15:30 Jakarta Time in the Teleconference Room, Faculty B Building, UIII, explored why ASEAN has struggled to resolve the South China Sea disputes over the past 30 years, focusing on the interaction between material interests, ASEAN norms, and the critical role of trust in ASEAN diplomacy.
